Worth School triumphant in Sussex Sevens

Worth were victorious in the Sussex Schools Rugby Sevens competition held at Chichester High School on Wednesday 27th February.  The Under 16 team beat Warden Park in an exciting final with an impressive final score of 37-0.

Worth reached the final after matches that afternoon against Steyning, Angmering, Bourne and then Seaford College in the quarter final. Seaford were seen off 34-0, a result that led Worth to a semi final against Bishop Luffa.

The final saw a confident side put in a fine display of open, fluid Sevens rugby and they ran Warden Park off their feet. The tries followed and the final result showed the true quality of the performance against a good Sevens side. The statistics make impressive reading with 207 points for and only 36 points scored against Worth all afternoon.

There were many fine performances, most notably from Christian Killoughery and Chris Gyere who scored an impressive 13 tries between them.

“It was a true squad effort and all thoughts are now focused towards the National Sevens Tournament at Roslyn Park on the 12th March” said team coach, Mr Jonathan Cuff.

This latest success comes hot on the heels of Worth’s full Under 16 rugby team win over Bognor Regis Community College two days previously in the quarter finals of the Sussex Cup. The Worth side, last year’s Under 15 Sussex Cup champions, will play Cardinal Newman School in the semi final on 6th March.

The Worth Under 16s team also includes a student from the County squad,  Edward O’Hare, continuing a strong rugby tradition at the school. Two more boys from Worth, Joseph Bradley and Daniele Manzi, were part of the Sussex Under 16 Rugby squad which toured Australia in 2007.
