The School Ethos

Worth is a Benedictine school and the inspiration for our way of life at Worth School comes directly from The Rule of St Benedict. This short document, based on the Gospels and monastic wisdom, shows us in a practical way how to seek God in community.  The fact that Benedict's spirituality is designed for community living makes it readily adaptable to school life.  A Chaplaincy team of staff and students have recently produced a poster interpreting the key values of The Rule into 'Ten Benedictine Values for Community Living', which specifically relate The Rule to the Worth School community.  These values provide direction and inspiration for us all.

What are St Benedict's key values? The Rule stresses the importance of community, worship, learning, service, listening, hospitality, stewardship, balance and moderation. Perhaps the three key values which underpin the rest are community, worship and service.

"They should each try to be the first to show respect to the other, supporting with the greatest patience one another's weaknesses of body or behaviour." RB 72

How are these insights lived out in our school life? Firstly, we all worship once a week as a community. This includes all teaching staff, students and monks. This joint act of worship is known as Thursday Worship. There are also, of course, other times for prayer in the Houses throughout the week.

Secondly, Benedict puts Christ at the centre of his thinking. Christ is encountered in our neighbour, especially in the weak and marginalised. This meeting of Christ in our neighbour is the foundation of the mutual respect which permeates all of our community life and of our appreciation for individual difference. It is also shown in our strong programme of community service. We are fortunate to have the tried and tested wisdom of The Rule to inspire our community life.

"People are not to pursue what they judge best for themselves, but instead, what they judge is best for others." RB 72
