Music at Worth

The choir There are ample opportunities to make music here at Worth - ranging from simply having instrumental lessons through to being involved in large group musical activities (Orchestra and Choral Society) or smaller-scale musical activities such as the Jazz Band or one of the many rock bands that use the 'Rock Room' each evening of the week.

All the main instruments are taught by our team of teachers, including electric and bass guitar, percussion and jazz piano.

There are several joint orchestral and choral concerts with girls schools, including Burgess Hill School for Girls and Woldingham School. These allow the musicians of the schools to put on exciting concerts at Worth, Burgess Hill and Woldingham and provide a welcome 'extra' dimension to our already busy musical life.

Playing the guitar Worth musicians play for the Day Care Centre on a number of occasions each year - always popular, particularly with the Day Centre visitors. The charity work of the department also extends to holding a couple of concerts each year in aid of a number of charities close to our hearts.

The Worth Abbey Community Orchestra is made up of local musicians as well as the very best present and past pupils of the school. They perform one or two symphonic concerts per year in the Abbey Church and have raised some £45,000 for various charities over the past 15 years.

Perhaps the most far-reaching musical activity is the Abbey Choir. This Choir, of some 40-45 Worth boys and staff, sings Mass each Sunday during term time (see events calendar for details). They are involved in a number of large-scale events over the year, including the magical candlelit Carol Service which regularly draws a congregation of up to 1500.  In addition, each summer the Choir go on tour giving a number of concerts abroad.  In 2006, they visited Krakow in Poland and this year they toured Germany.
