The Chaplaincy

Chaplaincy The Chaplaincy seeks to keep Christ at the centre of the life of the School. The full-time Chaplain is Father Martin and he is assisted by the Anglican chaplain, who devotes half of his time to Worth. His presence strengthens Worth's ecumenical outlook. Other part-time members of the Chaplaincy team include Fathers Peter, Kevin and Thomas. A housemaster and a member of the Religious Studies Department are also members of the team.

In addition to routine Chaplaincy events, such as preparation for First Holy Communion and Confirmation, prayer in the Houses, charity fund raising and various social gatherings, recent years have seen many new developments.

Thursday Worship is a weekly service which includes all the teaching staff, pupils and monks. There is much student participation in the service. For example, the Drama Department have presented in a contemporary setting a three part dramatization of the Stations of the Cross.

Twelve Chaplaincy Representatives from Year 12 help the Chaplaincy team to keep in touch with the students and to tune in more effectively to their needs. One of the main tasks of the Reps is to teach other students the practice of lectio divina. Lectio is the ancient Benedictine practice of prayerfully reading the Bible and of relating it to our own lives.  Members of the Chaplaincy team and a group of other committed students are also responsible for producing Identity, a twice yearly student magazine of a spiritual nature.

A series of Days of Reflection for year groups with local Catholic girls' schools (St Leonard's-Mayfield and Woldingham School) has been much appreciated by our students. The themes include Vocation and gifts, Self-image and how God sees us and Reasons for hoping & living. In addition Year 10 has a two day confirmation retreat at Kintbury. The Chaplaincy also provides ethos days and retreats for the teaching staff and runs seminars and pilgrimages for parents.

The Chaplaincy seeks to make more explicit the Benedictine and Christian character of the School.
