The Technology Department

Technology centre The department is housed in a modern, spacious, purpose-built Technology Centre which houses two workshops, and a networked computer room. Our aim is to foster problem-solving skills in both theoretical and practical environments.

We teach general technology up to age 14, giving students' experiences in the following areas:

  • the design and construction of wood-based artefacts
  • designing and making in plastic
  • simple mechanisms
  • basic skills with hand and power tools
  • the use of design software.
Student at workbench At 14 years of age we specialise in Electronics, helping students to develop their knowledge and expertise in areas that include:
  • the design and building of electronic circuits
  • the use of software for simulating circuits
  • the use of electronic test equipment
  • the opportunity to build electronic projects for themselves.
In the sixth form students can do advanced electronics, studying for AS and A Level qualifications through a distance-learning program. Among the topics covered by the sixth form course are:
  • platform-based experimental work using teaching kits
  • video-conferencing
  • advanced project construction.
There is a technology club, which is open to all students who wish to join. The club offers students the opportunity to pursue their own interests in the subject, and allows them to use the department's facilities outside of normal lesson times.
