The Electronics Department
Electronics can be studied at Worth at GCSE and A level. The course followed are those offered by the AQA exam board. This is a useful subject for anybody who enjoys a practical approach to learning. It is usually taken by boys who already have an interest and some experience of electronics. Students who take this subject often go on to study subjects in higher education which lead to a career in electrical engineering. A number of students have gone onto careers in “Sound and Lighting”, an interest which has often been stimulated by working within the school theatre on the technical side of school productions.
GCSE Electronics is taught in a purpose built electronics lab. Usually groups are small as the subject appears as an option in the GCSE blocks. The course is taught through the practical application of electronic circuits. The coursework is made up of two elements, a research essay into the use of electronics in modern society followed by a practical project where the student designs and makes a piece of electronic hardware.
A level Electronics is taught by distant learning using a specialist A level tutor provided by Nelson Thornes, a company with vast experience in this field. Students have a weekly video conference with their tutor and then support this with regular practical work using kits provided for the course. One module both at AS and A2 takes the form of a practical project.
Electronics can be viewed as being a subject suitable for a very small number of students at Worth but over the years it has proved to be an excellent choice for students with a natural aptitude and interest in this area. |
