The Academic Curriculum
Key Stage 3The academic curriculum at Worth is broad and designed to avoid early specialisation. It reflects the National Curriculum but offers more flexibility and choice. In Years 7 and 8, students have lessons in Art, English, Drama, French, Geography, History, ICT, Latin, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Science and Technology.In Year 9 the curriculum follows a similar pattern with some changes. The sciences are studied separately so students have lessons in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Spanish can replace French or be studied as an optional second language. Latin and Music also appear in the options.
Key Stage 4In Years 10 and 11 students prepare for the two-year GCSE course in a variety of subjects. They usually take eight or nine subjects. Please click here to open the GCSE Options 2008 handbook.The core syllabus includes English, French or Spanish, ICT, Mathematics, Religious Studies and the Sciences, which can be studied separately or in the Combined Science course which is the equivalent of two GCSEs. Art, Drama, Economics and Business Studies, Electronics, Geography, History, Latin, Music and Physical Education are available as options. The Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13)Worth offers Sixth Form students the opportunity to continue with a broad education through the International Baccalaureate program or to specialise in a more limited number of subjects at AS Level and A Level. Students normally take four subjects at AS Level in Year 12 and continue with three subjects in Year 13 to complete the full A Level. Private tuition is available in Chinese, German, Greek and Italian. As part of the International Baccalaureate (IB), the following subjects are normally available: Art, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, English, French, Geography, German, Greek, History, Italian, Latin, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Spanish and Theatre Arts. Students follow six courses, three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). In addition, all students must follow the Theory of Knowledge course. IB students write an extended essay of 4,000 words on any topic of interest. They must also follow the Creativity, Action and Service course. |
